Jarrow where he worked for another ten years when, due to part of the factories closing down, he was made redundant and was then only able to obtain part time employment for a while.
His eldest son Michael settled in the South and later resided in Windsor. His second son, Derek, married and had two sons, and working in factories in Slough where the family settled, and progressed to be a factory foreman and overseer.
His daughter Valerie returned to Tyneside and after serving as shop assistant at different trades, gained promotion to Manageress and then settled as private secretary to a business owner and managing director.
Winifred in later life suffered a number of illnesses and after being a wheelchair invalid for a number of years, passed away in 1990.
Winnie, or Wilhelmina jnr born on 21st May 1930, was evacuated to Westmoreland from 1939 to 1945, from the age of 9½ until her school leaving age when she returned home to South Shields. She had employment as a shop assistant before joining a local battery manufacturer – Vidor – where she met her future partner, Thomas Mein and married in 1951.
They had 3 children, the first Thomas jnr, being born on 6th September 1953. The next were twins, Robin and Elaine born on 11th March 1960.
Thomas jnr, after leaving school, served his time at an engineering factory in Jarrow and qualified with honours as a toolmaker. After following his employment abroad in a number of European countries, he returned home and took over the tenancy of a public house. This had been neglected, so he completely rebuilt and refurnished it and attracted a fresh clientele until he had a very successful hotel. He later took over another run-down hotel and once more re-altered the house until again, he had a very successful business.
He had previously married and his family consisted of one daughter before obtaining a divorce, and before acquiring his first public house, had remarried and was ably helped by his second wife re reorganise his two popular public houses.
Winnie and Tom’s twins both qualified for entrance to a university and Elaine gained her Bsc in Biology. Unable to obtain employment according to her qualifications, she made a success in Art and Dress Designing and also obtained employment as a Photographic Model.
